Privacy and seo: beware the google
Google has announced a new feature: personalised search results. What does it mean if you are responsible for a website ?
Quick recap on how it works: google will keep your search history, and what search result you clicked on. So if you search for any of the topic of your organisation, and that your website is on the 10th result, and that you click on it, google might decide that for you your website when you search this specific topic is the most relevant, and therefore put him in 1st position instead of the 10th.
While it might be convenient for a regular user, that's not good for you if you manage a website, as you want to see what everyone else sees, not some kind of optimised version of google that will let you think you are better referenced than you really are.
Luckily, you can disable the personalisation. If you manage a website, do it. now.
For those that feels uncomfortable with the idea that google keep that search history on you, and that he can associate that with your name if you use gmail, or google checkout, or google analytics, or... then I'd suggest to disable it as well.
I personally done it for my main accounts, and created a separate account that I'm going to use to see how quickly google starts altering the search results.
